2 teen female bombers kill more than 40 in Nigeria

BAUCHI, Nigeria (AP) — The teenage girls entered the busy marketplace separately Tuesday, their vests of explosives hidden beneath their full hijabs.

The first detonated her bomb, killing three women. As rescuers rushed in, the second girl screamed and set off her explosives, killing dozens more, according to witnesses and authorities.

More than 40 people died in the double suicide bombing in Maiduguri, a provincial capital in northeastern Nigeria, according to Haruna Issa, a hospital volunteer in the city.

Suspicion immediately fell on the insurgents from the Islamic militant group Boko Haram, which controls a large part of northeastern Nigeria and is blamed for the deaths this year of at least 1,500 people in Africa's most populous country.

In its campaign of violence, Boko Haram has used car bombs and men wearing vests of explosives. It also has begun using women who can cover the explosives with their hijabs, and the recruits appear to have gotten younger, with several instances of teenage attackers earlier this year.

The militants attracted international attention with their April kidnapping of more than 200 schoolgirls from Chibok, about 125 kilometers (78 miles) southwest of Maiduguri. The schoolgirls are still missing and their plight has aroused international concern and prompted the #BringBackOurGirls social media campaign.

On Oct. 17, the parents of the schoolgirls were encouraged when the Nigerian military announced a cease-fire with Boko Haram and said negotiations had begun for the release of the captives.

Those hopes were quickly dashed when Boko Haram fighters continued attacks and seized several cities and towns across the northeast. In a video statement, Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau denied the cease-fire and scoffed at claims of negotiations to release the schoolgirls.

It was not known if Tuesday's attackers were connected with the April abduction. A worker with a nongovernmental organization said young women in northern Nigeria are especially vulnerable to recruitment by the extremist group. The worker spoke on condition of anonymity because she feared for her safety.

The coordinated bombings by the two girls dressed in full hijabs took place as the marketplace was crowded with shoppers, said Abba Aji Kalli, the coordinator of the Civilian Joint Task Force in Borno state.

The first girl set off her explosives, while the second apparently waited until the rescuers rushed in to help before detonating her bomb, killing another 30 people, Kalli said.

"I am right here at the scene, and I have before me 11 corpses. ... Many have been taken away by relatives, while others are taken to the state specialists' hospital," he added.

On July 2, a car bomb in the same market killed 56 people.

Maiduguri, the largest city in Borno state and the birthplace of Boko Haram five years ago, is home to a Nigerian military headquarters. So far, the government troops have been unable to halt the bloodshed in the city and surrounding areas.

Borno is one of the three states in northeastern Nigeria that are under a state of emergency because of the extremist violence.

In a new strategy, Boko Haram is seeking to form a caliphate, mimicking the Islamic State group.
Boko Haram still holds many centers in an area covering an estimated 20,000 square kilometers (7,700 square miles) and has said it is imposing a strict version of Shariah law. The insurgents want to impose Islamic rule over all Nigeria, whose 170 million people are about evenly divided between Christians and Muslims.

Obasanjo bombs Jonathan again, says President’s “evil” actions destroying Nigerian democracy

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has again torn at President Goodluck Jonathan, saying Nigerian democracy remained at risk due to the action of the present administration.

Speaking at a book Launch in honour of the pioneer chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, Mustapha Akanbi‎, in Abuja, Mr. Obasanjo, who is the Chairman of the occasion, said the president should stop encouraging ‘verbal violence which may not physically hurt but has ways of degenerating into physical violence’.

Mr. Obasanjo said the greatest indictment against any administration is to be seen trying to destroy opposition of all sort‎s which invariably mean destroying democracy.

“Management of democracy without resorting to brute force and dictatorial tendencies must be cultivated,” the former President said.

“As a leader, you must not deliberately do evil or condone evil. You should know that you will one day give account to God, you may cover up here, but before God, there is no cover up.”

The former president also spoke at lenght on the President’s handling of the Boko Haram insurgency, ‎corruption, the economy and youth unemployment.

On insecurity, Mr. Obasanjo said Boko Haram is not out to “frustrate anyone’s political efforts” and lamented that it took Mr. Jonathan the years to ‎fully understand the menace.

On corruption, Mr. Obasanjo said, “when the head is rotten, the whole body is useless”
On the economy, he said Nigeria would continue to sink deeper and that what Nigerians are told about the state of the economy “is not truly what the economy is”.

“The economy is in doldrums, if not in reverse,” he said.

Mr. Obasanjo’s latest attack on the President is coming seven days after he rated Mr. Jonathan’s performance as below average.

The former president had spoken last weekend in Abeokuta while addressing book writers as part of activities marking the Ake Arts and Book Festival.

“I rate this current administration below average,” Mr. Obasanjo said in response to a question about Mr. Jonathan’s performance.

The former president also said he deserved credit for helping an individual from a minority tribe become Nigeria’s President.

“Rather than take blame for bringing Jonathan to power, I should be taking credit,” he added.
The Nigerian presidency responded Sunday, slamming Mr. Obasanjo and describing his rating as untrue and misleading.

In a statement in Abuja, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, said Mr. Obasanjo’s rating was at variance “with the facts on the ground”.

Mr. Okupe said President Jonathan had performed so well that “in terms of performance and achievements, no administration since 1960 when Nigeria gained independence from Britain, has done as much as that of President Jonathan”.

Photo: Dayo Adeneye, Muma Gee Joins Politics

As the 2015 elections draw near, more and more entertainers including comedians, actors, musicians etc have made their intention to go into politics known.

In fact this is the first time in the history of Nigeria that so many Nigerian entertainers will be embarking on political sojourns to supposedly serve the populace.

The most recent entertainers who have joined the political race is Award winning TV and Radio broadcaster, Dayo 'D1' Adeneye, and Muma Gee.

Dayo is going for Ogun State House of Assembly, Odogbolu Constituency under APC in the 2015 elections, while singer Muma  is going for House of Reps, Abua/Odua and Ahoada East LGA, Rivers State under PDP.

They join other Nigerian entertainers like, Kenny Saint Best, 9ice, Julius Agwu, Tony Tetuila, Kenneth Okonkwo, Kate Henshaw, Desmond Elliot, Bob-Manuel Udokwu, Funke Adesiyan, Yemi Solade and so many others.

The big question now is what is the real reason why all these politicians are going into politics??? Time I guess will tell?
